Fake it til you make it ……. or how to be more confident to get ahead

Both men and women suffer from confidence issues at work. These start to creep in, strangely, in our mid-careers when we should be more certain about what we’re good at. However, years of being told what we’re not good at start to take their toll and we start to feel sick before big meetings, or even faking real illness so we can stay at home.

By overcoming your lack of confidence in the workplace, you will feel happier, more well and utlimately rise to the position you should hold on the corporate ladder. Try these tips.

  1. Say “yes” to new things. We get comfortable, in our careers, with the things we know we can do and many of us avoid a challenge. Try saying yes to new opportunities, even if you don’t feel confident, or don’t want to do it. The people who say “yes” get on in life and are seen as being confident by others. Next time you feel like saying “no”, give that opportunity a whirl no matter how small.
  2. Lean on what you do well. We all have talents and skills, which are often more highly valued by others than by ourselves. To feel more confident, rely heavily on the things you know you do well, especially if you also enjoy them. There’s nothing more confidence-inspiring than seeing a colleague who knows how to do a good job. Its great for your reputation.
  3. Put on a happy face. When you’re unsure of yourself, don’t show it, especially in those clammy-palm inducing scenarios like largemeetings and presentations. Count on the fact that you’ve done your homework and put on your bravest face, and your smartest clothes! Karren Brady, business guru, said, “Confidence, coupled with self-esteem, is a great way to make your mark in an organisation. Confidence and good self-esteem can be expressed in the way you dress, where you sit in meetings …..and in what you say, or don’t say. about yourself.”
  4. Mind the gap. Be aware of the situations and projects that make you feel less than confident. Once you’re aware of the skills you’re not so certain of, plug the gaps. For example, if you hate public speaking, take a course or if you get nervous in client meetings, try shadowing the best client executive you have in your firm.

We have one life to live so lets no waste time feeling self-conscious about the things we’re not so confident about. Just do it, as they say.

Confidence is not the same as being cocky, says Karren, rather confidence, coupled with self-esteem, is a great way to make your mark in an organisation. Confidence and good self-esteem can be expressed in the way you dress, where you sit in meetings (are you up front or hiding in the back?), and in what you say – or don’t say – about yourself: “I learnt never to belittle my contributions, and to say thank you when people complimented me about my work. I didn’t say, ‘It’s nothing,’ because it wasn’t nothing. And if I didn’t value it, who would? – See more at: http://www.mildredtalabi.com/karren-brady-strong-woman/#sthash.k3A5kCMU.dpuf
