It’s a common refrain among working women. “I think I’m going to be found out any day now. I’m a fake; I have no idea what I’m doing!” More than 70% of women suffer from Imposter Syndrome at some point in their careers. The figures for impacted men are much lower. If you’re feeling like a fraud in your job, what can you do about it?
- Get back to reality. Your self-image needs to reflect what’s really going on. Are you actually failing at work, or are you doing a good job? Make a list of the objectives that have been set for you over the last 6 months to a year, and check them off. This should be part of your ongoing career maintenance anyway. How are you doing? If you are managing to do the majority of what’s expected of you, chances are you’re the right person for the job.
- Great expectations. Are you doing what your Boss wants and expects? Sit down for regular reviews and get feedback. Don’t be needy, though, or seek approval. Stick to the facts.
- High achiever. Note your achievements across your career. Have you pulled off any major deals or organised big events? How many times have you been promoted or head-hunted? These achievements speak to you and what you offer.
- Skills audit. Find a quiet time to write a concrete list of the skills you have. There’s no need to be modest. If you’ve been hired because you’re a brilliant business analyst, add it to the lost. Refer back to your list when you’re feeling less confident. Have faith.
